Research and Planning: Why videos go viral

Videos go viral everyday with stories on the news about the next singing cat or talking dog as well as stories on the youtube videos that have helped those suffering with cancer, or the ever popular music video. Yet how and why do these particular videos go viral and go from having 9 views to 2,000,000 in the space of a few days or in some cases in a few hours.
For unsigned artists like Amy's Ghost if their music video went viral not only would it increase the publicity for them but could lead to major record companies signing them up and giving them record deals and so therefore for many a comical video on youtube that gets them hundreds of millions of hits can reward them with an interview on BBC news however for bands and artists youtube allows them to publicly advertise their music and who they are in a whole new different way then how people did it a decade ago.
A link from the guardian explains why videos go viral.
