Planning and Research: My own creative process at AS

Research and Planning: My Definition of Creativity

Creativity is usiing my surroundings and imagination to express my thoughs for a particular given stimulus, event for my own personal benefit and influences from my own personal experince.
Yet it results in hundreds of creative decisions it is by no means a simple process.
Originality is linked to creativity but in my own opinion being creative does not mean being original.

Research and Planning: "That Kiss" The Courteeners

“That Kiss” The Courteeners

Today we worked on “That Kiss” by the Courteeners, who are an Indie group that come from Manchester. The challenge was to use the lyrics and the song to create a concept and storyboard for a music video for the song. In my team we decided to place the bad in a London tube station, as even though they are a band we believed that the symbolism of travel and journeys is very similar to the idea that a relationship is very much a journey, and the song to us was about that particular journey coming to an end.

The camera would be at a point of view shot, as it watches the tube come to the stop the doors open, and then a close up shows the guitar begin to play. There is then an extreme close up of the lead singer as the song begins.

The scene then moves to a dank bar, where there are three key people, the boyfriend, the girlfriend and the man that the girlfriend is cheating on him with. The shot then moves to a long shot of the lead singer following the boyfriend down a dark street. The scene then moves back to the tube station with a montage of close ups, mid shots and long shots of the band and the lead singer.

It then returns to watching the boyfriend walking down the street, and then a series of reaction shots are focused on him as he sees his girlfriend once again in the street with the man she is having the affair with. Once again it moves to the montage of the bad playing on the platform. You then see the boyfriend and girlfriend in the flat arguing with each other and the argument moves through the flat until they eventually come to sit on either end of the sofa. The song ends and the camera still at a point of view angle moves back on to the tube the doors close and the band are left on the platform as the tube moves away.

The Lyrics

The way that you looked at him, and then you looked at me.
You must think that I’m proper blind,
Proper blind not to see.

That I was just a stop gap sitting somewhere in-between his hand and his lap
Let me tell you that I wasn’t born yesterday, my dear.

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was everything, it’s really such a shame it’s so hard to explain to you

He’s back in town tonight, he’s expecting you round a quarter to nine
but you won’t be there, cuz he prefers the proverbial of you.

If he only knew what you thought, the lust, the lack of trust, the temptation you thought
He’s worthless as maxims and flouts
He’s just a passing fashion and he’s on his way out

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was everything, it’s really such a shame it’s so hard to explain to you.

I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it

I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was absolutely everything, it’s really such a shame it’s so hard to explain to you.

The video

The real music video for this song is far different to the idea that my team and I came up with, however it portrays and man (the lead singer) at a house, most likely set in Manchester, where he was at the party, the music is in time with the changing lights within the party. The story is of the lead singer constantly making eye contact with a girl throughout the part despite the fact that she is there with another man. It moves from the house to him walking through the streets.

At the start of the video you see him place a small piece of paper in his pocket, it is then later revealed that this is what was given to him by her and it has her lip print on it.

The video portrays the story of the lead singer, wanting a fling with a girl who’s in a relationship and misses his chance and perhaps to an extent he regrets this and all his left to remember her by is that one piece of paper.

Research and Planning: Magazines

Research and Planning: Music Magazines

There are several magazines in the U.K and around the world that are dedicated to music and the advertising of artists as well as at times advertising actors e.g. Brad Pitt on the front cover of Rolling Stones magazine.

Research and Planning: MTV

MTV, is an American television channel based in New York City that launched on August 1st 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJS. Today, MTV still plays some music videos but it primarily broadcast a variety of reality and scripted television programmes targeted at young adults and adolescents. Since its debut, MTV has had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture. Slogans such as “I want my MTV” were embedded in public thought, the concept of the VJ was popularised, the idea of a dedicated video—based outlet for music was introduced, and both artists and fans found a central location for music news, concerts, events and promotion. MTV has also been referenced countless times in popular culture by musicians, other TV channels and television programmes, films and books. MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of which have gone independent. MTV’S influence on young people including issues related to censorship and social activism has been a subject of intense debate for years. MTV’s choice to focus on non-music programming has been contested since the 1990s, demonstrating the channel’s impact on popular culture.

Research and Planning: Deconstruction Gotye Somebody That I useds to Know (feat. Kimbra)

Gotye Somebody that I used to know (feat.Kimbra)

The vide begins with a close up tilting across Gotye’s body, the camera then stays fixed on a medium close up of his face as he begins the song, the shot then changes to a close up showing an abstract picture being painted on the white wall behind him, to begin it is unclear as to why the wall is being painted and what relevance this has to the song and the narrative.

The video continues with faster cuts to between the painting and him, and then the painting begins to occur on his body, the pictures seem fragmented to make it seem as if the painting occurred quickly this continues until the painting is finished and then you realize that he is painted so that every part of him camouflages in to the wall.

The shot then widens to reveal a female singer who is also painted in to the wall, she is replying to what his comments and then it appears as if she is asking him for forgiveness and he is refusing what she is saying, and the audience have the urge to side with him as it appears that the woman broke his heart, as the words “now you’re just somebody that I used to know” make it seem as though he once believed that there was something special about her but after her actions it is clear that this is no longer the case.

She returns to her original spot and starts to become unpainted, as he continues to sing and the shot angles change between the angles on his face and to watch her no longer blend in to the wall in the way that he does. His facial expressions suggest that he is sadden by this but the lyrics still suggest that he has made his decision and will stick by it.

At the end the narrative of the video can be seen in many different ways, one interpretation is that she has been unpainted as this abstract world is what separates him from society and that she was once part of that and now he has cut her off, she can no longer be part of this mad world. Or it can be seen that she has trapped him in this world and in betraying him he will forever be trapped.

Research and Planning: Sinead O'Connor- Nothing Compares to you

Sinead O’Connor- Nothing Compares to You.

This video is unique in the way that it portrays the artist herself, as for the majority of the video the main focus is on her face, with the use of a close up. This in itself can present challenges in terms of synchronizing the artist miming and the music. The video allows the audience to truly show the emotion within the artists face and how she is truly heartbroken after the split between her and her lover.

The video also cuts to montages of quite gothic statues and buildings in between the shots of the artists face this leads the audience to see the rather dark and depressing side that her life has taken after the break-up of her and her partner.

Yet it always throughout the video for the audience to see that the singer truly feels her songs which in many modern videos is lost, many mainstream artists are publicized in ways that gain them the more public attention and are major exhibitionists who use sex appeal and club settings in order to create their image. However this video shows that that is not always true and that the artist genuinely knows what it’s like to become broken in two by a relationship, this is something that nearly everyone can relate two and she is simplistic in her message and the videos narrative.

Throughout the video she is dressed in a long black coat this connotes morning and depression her make-up also connotes this as it is not filled with positive bright colours but negative colours that make the situation similar to as if the loved one had died and that she is struggling to deal with this.

The video is proof that a music video does not have to be filled with fast cuts and a large variety of shots but that sometimes having a few shot varieties can be equally as powerful.

Research and Planning: Definitions of Music Videos

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.[1] Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip".
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected. Other music videos may be without a set concept, being merely a filmed version of the song's live performance.[2]

Research and Planning: Rock Music

Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in 1950s America and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States.[1][2][3] It has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.
Musically, rock has centered around the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature utilizing a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse and common musical characteristics are difficult to define. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. The dominance of rock by white, male musicians has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music.
By the late 1960s, referred to as the "golden age"[1] or "classic rock"[2] period, a number of distinct rock music sub-genres had emerged, including hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, and jazz-rock fusion, many of which contributed to the development of psychedelic rock influenced by the counter-cultural psychedelic scene. New genres that emerged from this scene included progressive rock, which extended the artistic elements; glam rock, which highlighted showmanship and visual style; and the diverse and enduring major sub-genre of heavy metal, which emphasized volume, power and speed. In the second half of the 1970s, punk rock both intensified and reacted against some of these trends to produce a raw, energetic form of music characterized by overt political and social critiques. Punk was an influence into the 1980s on the subsequent development of other sub-genres, including New Wave, post-punk and eventually the alternative rock movement. From the 1990s alternative rock began to dominate rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop, and indie rock. Further fusion sub-genres have since emerged, including pop punk, rap rock, and rap metal, as well as conscious attempts to revisit rock's history, including the garage rock/post-punk and synthpop revivals at the beginning of the new millennium.
Rock music has also embodied and served as the vehicle for cultural and social movements, leading to major sub-cultures including mods and rockers in the UK and the "hippie" counterculture that spread out from San Francisco in the US in the 1960s. Similarly, 1970s punk culture spawned the visually distinctive goth and emo subcultures. Inheriting the folk tradition of the protest song, rock music has been associated with political activism as well as changes in social attitudes to race, sex and drug use, and is often seen as an expression of youth revolt against adult consumerism and conformity.

Reseach and Planning: Reggae Music

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.
Reggae is most easily recognized by the rhythmic accents on the off-beat, usually played by guitar or piano (or both), known as the skank. This pattern accents the second and fourth beat in each bar (or the "and"s of each beat depending on how the music is counted) and combines with the drums emphasis on beat three to create a unique feel and sense of phrasing in contrast to most other popular genres focus on beat one, the "downbeat".[1] The tempo of reggae is usually felt as slower than the popular Jamaican forms, ska and rocksteady, which preceded it.[2] It is this slower tempo, the guitar/piano offbeats, the emphasis on the third beat, and the use of syncopated, melodic bass lines that differentiates reggae from other music, although other musical styles have incorporated some of these innovations separately.

Research and Planning: R&B

Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated to R&B and RnB, is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s.[1] The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular.[2]
The term has subsequently had a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequently applied to blues records.[3] Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as "Contemporary R&B".

Research and Planning: Popular Music

Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll.[1] The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, even though the former is a description of music which is popular (and can include any style), whilst the latter is a specific genre containing qualities of mass appeal.[1]
As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country;[1] nonetheless, there are core elements which define pop. Such include generally short-to-medium length songs, written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks.[1]
So-called "pure pop" music, such as power pop, features all these elements, utilising electric guitars, drums and bass for instrumentation;[1] in the case of such music, the main goal is usually that of being pleasurable to listen to, rather than having much artistic depth.[1] Pop music is generally thought of as a genre which is commercially recorded and desires to have a mass audience appeal.[1]

Research and Planning: Jazz Music

Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in black communities in the Southern United States.
It was born out of a mix of African and European music traditions. Its African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swung note.[1] From its early development until the present day jazz has also incorporated music from American popular music.[2]
As the music has developed and spread around the world it has drawn on many different national, regional and local musical cultures giving rise, since its early 20th century American beginnings, to many distinctive styles: New Orleans jazz dating from the early 1910s, big band swing, Kansas City jazz and Gypsy jazz from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s and on down through West Coast jazz, cool jazz, avant-garde jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz, modal jazz, free jazz, Latin jazz in various forms, soul jazz, jazz fusion and jazz rock, smooth jazz, jazz-funk, punk jazz, acid jazz, ethno jazz, jazz rap, cyber jazz, Indo jazz, M-Base, nu jazz, urban jazz and other ways of playing the music.
In a 1988 interview, trombonist J.J. Johnson said, "Jazz is restless. It won't stay put and it never will".[3]

Research and Planning: Hip Hop/ Rap Music

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop,[1][2] rap music[2][3][4] or hip-hop music,[2][5] is a musical genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.[2] It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, breaking/dancing, and graffiti writing.[6][7][8] Other elements include sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing.
While often used to refer to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture.[9][10] The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music,[2][5] though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing and scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.[11][12]
