Research and Planning: Music Magazines
There are several magazines in the U.K and around the world that are dedicated to music and the advertising of artists as well as at times advertising actors e.g. Brad Pitt on the front cover of Rolling Stones magazine.
Research and Planning: MTV
MTV, is an American television channel based in New York City that launched on August 1st 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJS. Today, MTV still plays some music videos but it primarily broadcast a variety of reality and scripted television programmes targeted at young adults and adolescents. Since its debut, MTV has had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture. Slogans such as “I want my MTV” were embedded in public thought, the concept of the VJ was popularised, the idea of a dedicated video—based outlet for music was introduced, and both artists and fans found a central location for music news, concerts, events and promotion. MTV has also been referenced countless times in popular culture by musicians, other TV channels and television programmes, films and books. MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of which have gone independent. MTV’S influence on young people including issues related to censorship and social activism has been a subject of intense debate for years. MTV’s choice to focus on non-music programming has been contested since the 1990s, demonstrating the channel’s impact on popular culture. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTV

Research and Planning: Deconstruction Gotye Somebody That I useds to Know (feat. Kimbra)
Gotye Somebody that I used to know (feat.Kimbra)
The vide begins with a close up tilting across Gotye’s body, the camera then stays fixed on a medium close up of his face as he begins the song, the shot then changes to a close up showing an abstract picture being painted on the white wall behind him, to begin it is unclear as to why the wall is being painted and what relevance this has to the song and the narrative.
The video continues with faster cuts to between the painting and him, and then the painting begins to occur on his body, the pictures seem fragmented to make it seem as if the painting occurred quickly this continues until the painting is finished and then you realize that he is painted so that every part of him camouflages in to the wall.
The shot then widens to reveal a female singer who is also painted in to the wall, she is replying to what his comments and then it appears as if she is asking him for forgiveness and he is refusing what she is saying, and the audience have the urge to side with him as it appears that the woman broke his heart, as the words “now you’re just somebody that I used to know” make it seem as though he once believed that there was something special about her but after her actions it is clear that this is no longer the case.
She returns to her original spot and starts to become unpainted, as he continues to sing and the shot angles change between the angles on his face and to watch her no longer blend in to the wall in the way that he does. His facial expressions suggest that he is sadden by this but the lyrics still suggest that he has made his decision and will stick by it.
At the end the narrative of the video can be seen in many different ways, one interpretation is that she has been unpainted as this abstract world is what separates him from society and that she was once part of that and now he has cut her off, she can no longer be part of this mad world. Or it can be seen that she has trapped him in this world and in betraying him he will forever be trapped.
Research and Planning: Sinead O'Connor- Nothing Compares to you
Sinead O’Connor- Nothing Compares to You.
This video is unique in the way that it portrays the artist herself, as for the majority of the video the main focus is on her face, with the use of a close up. This in itself can present challenges in terms of synchronizing the artist miming and the music. The video allows the audience to truly show the emotion within the artists face and how she is truly heartbroken after the split between her and her lover.
The video also cuts to montages of quite gothic statues and buildings in between the shots of the artists face this leads the audience to see the rather dark and depressing side that her life has taken after the break-up of her and her partner.
Yet it always throughout the video for the audience to see that the singer truly feels her songs which in many modern videos is lost, many mainstream artists are publicized in ways that gain them the more public attention and are major exhibitionists who use sex appeal and club settings in order to create their image. However this video shows that that is not always true and that the artist genuinely knows what it’s like to become broken in two by a relationship, this is something that nearly everyone can relate two and she is simplistic in her message and the videos narrative.
Throughout the video she is dressed in a long black coat this connotes morning and depression her make-up also connotes this as it is not filled with positive bright colours but negative colours that make the situation similar to as if the loved one had died and that she is struggling to deal with this.
The video is proof that a music video does not have to be filled with fast cuts and a large variety of shots but that sometimes having a few shot varieties can be equally as powerful.
